What is a Ceilidh?
Basically, you get a bunch of people who have hopefully practiced playing some musical instruments (the "Band"), and stick them at the front of an open area (a hall, field, car park, etc, hopefully somewhere with a bar).
Everyone else (the "Dancers"), wait for the person who knows what's going on (the "Caller"), shouts "Form up into groups of X" (where X is the number required in the group for this dance) and describes each step of the simple dance until most of them have got the hang of it.
It is worth bearing in mind that most people will forget pretty quickly (especially after a few beers), however, the ever faithful caller will be on hand to help out. And so the band plays and the dancers dance, all under the wise instruction of the caller.
Well Done! that was your first virtual Ceilidh! Now come along tto a real one - they're much more fun!
